S.A.F.E.

(Social And Fundraising Enterprises)

Battle waste, hunger, poverty - one refill at a time!

S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry is more than just a refillery. It is a MOVEMENT. Be part of the S.A.F.E. Movement, which promotes social and environmental responsibility both locally and beyond!

Hi! I'm Lana, your S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry Owner. My aim is shepherding individuals & communities in need towards safety, self-sufficiency and sustainability!

At S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry, I don't claim to be zero waste or perfect, but I do strive to reduce hunger, poverty, waste (including product and packaging waste) while supporting socially responsible causes/organizations, and environmentally responsible brands based on these values:

*support Canadian, local, and companies that support social enterprise, social causes, fairtrade, fair wages, fair and just practices for all, including, but not limited to: women founded companies, sustainable business loan companies, for people in poverty who lack skills, training, and financial security to provide for their families (ie. Kiva.org) and more!

*sell products that value the efforts and appreciate the talents of local artisans from all walks of life, including those marginalized.

*ensure products are sustainable packaged, use quality rates, and often upcycled and recycled ingredients, and adhere to ethical material sourcing

S.A.F.E. Hierarchy of Needs

...as inspired by The Shepherd-Model

Food insecurity & poverty are about more than just providing food and personal care products for individuals, families, and communities. It is about 'putting first things first' in a 'SAFE Hierarchy of Needs'. That means prioritization is taken in meeting needs on a deeper level.

1) Self-Actualization/Fulfillment/Joy Needs (Ps.23:6)

2) Self-Esteem/Courage Needs (Ps. 23:5)

3) Love/Care/Protection Needs (Ps. 23:4)

4) Safety/Guidance Needs (Ps. 23:2)

5) Psychological/Physical Needs (Ps. 23:1)

*"....I SHALL NOT BE IN WANT"

The Shepherd-Model approach is demonstrated within the social service agency in which I work, and, is, I believe inspired by our Good Shepherd, who not only adequately cares for our physical needs, but who can satisfy our heart too! It is my vision that S.A.F.E. can help meet ALL needs of each individual that uses our services.

About

The S.A.F.E. logo represents the core of our mission and our Shepherd-Model approach to caring for, guiding, and giving courage to individuals with unmet needs based on the S.A.F.E. Hierarchy of Needs.  The logo is also a symbol of the battle that we face in regards to the existence of poverty and hunger within our society today.

THE IDEA IS TO: SUPPORT AND HELP GIVE A REFILL OF AN ESSENTIAL PRODUCT (BOTH FOOD & NON-FOOD), SELF-SUFFICIENCY, AND POSSIBLE EMPLOYMENT TO AN INDIVIDUAL IN NEED! ENCOURAGE A LOW-WASTE LIFESTYLE TO PROMOTE ZERO WASTE, ZERO HUNGER, ZERO POVERTY!

*INCLUDED WITHIN THE REFILLERY IS NOT ONLY HEALTH FOOD AND PRODUCTS BASED ON NUTRITIONAL AND 'S.A.F.E.' NEEDS, BUT ALSO S.A.F.E. UPCYCLED PRODUCTS (SOME MADE BY VULNERABLE INDIVIDUALS) PROVIDING EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS, AND, ALSO, MENTORING/ COACHING/SHEPHERDING BY A CERTIFIED HEALTH AND NUTRITION COACH, COMMUNITY PARTNERS, VOLUNTEERS AND OTHER STAFF, AND MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WILLING TO HELP.

  •  A Coat of Arms often replicates the shape of a shield demonstrating protection of a family while in battle. Often we have battles in our own lives as well.  In the social services, and, even in a typical life situation, we can have battles and trials involving hunger/food insecurity, poverty, ill health, instability, homelessness, poor mental health. and so on. Part of our role as a good and proactive citizen, can be to support, educate & guide vulnerable community members.

  •  S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry hopes to include a refillery for personal and eco-safe care products, but also, local, handmade and some bulk food items by artisans and individuals who need sustainable income for their families, but also those who give back to the community by volunteering, donating products or sales to charity, or have an environmental focus (organic, upcycled, repurposed products). Eventually, S.A.F.E. may also offer nutritional and health consultations, informational workshops, training, and more resource information by community partners within each of our site(s).

  • S.A.F.E. Family Health Coach believes in a dignified approach to shepherding people to meet their own needs. My vision is food access, employment, and mentorship which empowers individuals, and, involves leading them, following them, and walking alongside community members when they need extra support. The Shepherd Model Approach within a social enterprise type business encourages building trusting relationships with the individuals we serve, and to develop relationships with them, and with the community at large, so that they may have peace, and, have faith in the provision of a 'good shepherd', and of our care and support.

My approach aims to meet the needs of whole families and involves all members to be interactive, and successful, in their goals to leading a healthier, safeR lifestyle, AND ALSO PROMOTING THE IDEA OF THE IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY.  In family-centred coaching, following the Shepherd Model of Psalm 23, any, and all, family members are put in the 'driver's seat of the work, because their 'Shepherd Coach' allows them to use their gifts and abilities to gain employment within the social enterprise, offer them what they need, give wise counsel as to  what they can build on, and, also how we can support them in whatever challenge they need to work on. It is my hope that we can work together and be a role model to empower families and community members to  be transformational in all areas of sustainability, responsibility, and general safety for themselves, their families, their communities, and the environment.

STEP 1:
I plan to empower families by giving them resources and information within my refillery on good nutrition, environmental awareness, self-sufficiency training, and life skills, on how to prevent future health conditions, and break the generational cycle of poverty and food insecurity for themselves and their children, and the upcoming community generations.

I will have a variety of S.A.F.E. Refill Products and Pantry Products, each with an environmental focus (organic, upcycled, recycled, surplus) and which feature both local and fairtrade healthy-food choices, as well as non-food products which are created using environmental sustainability practices and which support sustainable, and fairtrade methods, and equality to all!

I believe in self-sufficiency for all families, and powered by a sustainable community and team approach!

STEP 2:

I hope to provide  information through workshops, power points, resource information handouts, guest speakers, consultations, community services partners, individual, and family 'gatherings/meetings/shepherd-type coaching'. This will be information about what they can do, or what I can help them with in order to support overall health and wellness physically, and within their home environments, and will be for the betterment and cohesion of their self-sufficient families, and the growing and sustainable communities we serve.

STEP 3:

This Shepherd Coaching step will go a step deeper and give families a means for self-sustaining and being able to provide for their own families for a lifetime! This step will offer further resources, support (i.e. employment, housing, any other needed resources to sustain families and keep them 'S.A.F.E.') and will also include a future plan to follow. This hopes to ensure that families and individuals meet their goals, be empowered, and allows them the dignity and the satisfaction in fulfilling them!

What You Get at S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry

Access to Affordable Health Food for Families

My S.A.F.E. Refill Pantry is a zero waste refillery that sells low waste and plastic-free products to help keep the environment, yourself, and, individuals in need, SAFE. I promote sustainability for individuals, families, communities, and the environment in all ways. I provide healthy,environmentally-friendly (sometimes S.A.F.E. Upcycled Products), and affordable food to families with food insecurity, as well as personal care products, so that they may have dignity, resources, education, skills and training, and meet needs, all the while ensuring the optimal health for their families and themselves, now, and in the future!

What is a refillery? What products can I refill? Why is a refillery important?

A refillery is a retail store designed to help you reduce your single-use plastic consumption by offering the option to reuse and refill your own containers again and again with household and personal care products.

You can refill bath and body products, cleaners, and some bulk food items (intended for quick, easy, and healthy meals). You can also find locally made, eco-safe products that are safe for your home or on-the-go.

Why is it important? Refilling reduces waste, specifically plastic waste, and in a time period where we are exponentially producing more and more plastics but are only recycling 9% of the plastic that we throw away, our whole production and consumption system needs to change.

But a simple start that you can do is to ditch the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset that mainly just focuses on recycling, and to switch to a “reduce, reuse, REFILL” mindset. By choosing to reuse your containers rather than recycling them or tossing them in the garbage we can save resources and energy. With refillery shops and refill stations you can reuse your household and personal care product bottles again and again by refilling them from a bulk source.

This way instead of “recycling” (more like wish-cycling) over 615 million shampoo bottles across Canada and the USA, and hoping that the bottles will actually be recycled instead of thrown into landfills, we can change the system one bottle at a time so that no bottles are thrown out and create a closed-loop.
